Five years ago, I was sitting in a corner office at a major bank in Amsterdam. Twelve-hour days, endless meetings, and a growing sense that something was missing. Sound familiar?
Today, I teach Pilates. And I've never been happier.
If you're reading this, you're probably where I was — successful on paper, but wondering if there's more to life than quarterly reports. The good news? Making the switch is more achievable than you think.
Why Corporate Professionals Make Great Pilates Instructors
Here's something that might surprise you: many of the best Pilates instructors don't come from fitness backgrounds. At PT Studio 7 Amsterdam, several of our instructors transitioned from banking, software development, and corporate careers.
Why do they excel? Because the skills that made you successful in business translate directly:
- Attention to detail — Essential for correcting form and preventing injuries
- Client management — You already know how to build relationships and understand needs
- Discipline and work ethic — The certification process requires commitment
- Problem-solving — Every body is different; adapting exercises requires analytical thinking
- Communication skills — Explaining complex movements clearly is crucial
The Biggest Fear: "Can I Afford to Make This Change?"
This was my biggest worry too. I had a mortgage, responsibilities, a lifestyle I'd built. Walking away felt impossible.
But here's what I learned: you don't have to quit your job to become certified.
Weekend-only training programs exist specifically for professionals like us. At PT 7 Academy, courses run on Saturdays and Sundays, 12:00-18:00. You keep your income while you train. No dramatic leap required.
What Does the Certification Process Look Like?
The Reformer Instructor Course at PT 7 Academy is a 12-week program that includes:
- 48 hours of in-person technical training
- Comprehensive anatomy and movement theory
- 5 hours of observation + 5 hours of practice teaching
- Theoretical and practical exams
- One-on-one final assessment
- Certificate upon completion
The investment is €2,000 + VAT — significantly less than comprehensive programs from BASI (€5,000+) or Polestar (€7,000+). And you can pay in three installments if needed.
The Part Nobody Talks About: Building Your Client Base
Getting certified is one thing. Building a career is another. This is where PT 7 Academy differs from other programs.
We offer work opportunities at our studio for successful graduates.
Instead of finishing your certification and wondering "now what?", you have a clear path to start teaching immediately. You build experience, confidence, and income while you decide whether to go full-time or keep Pilates as a meaningful side career.
A Day in the Life: What Actually Changes
Let me paint you a picture of my typical day now:
- 7:00 AM — Morning walk, coffee, actually enjoying breakfast
- 9:00 AM — First client session. Watching someone's posture improve, seeing their confidence grow
- 12:00 PM — Lunch break. A real break, not eating at my desk
- 2:00 PM — Small group class. Energy, laughter, connection
- 5:00 PM — Done. Home for dinner. Present for my family
Compare that to my banking days: rushed mornings, lunch meetings, late nights, weekends checking emails. The salary was higher, but the cost was everything else.
Is the Money Really Enough?
Let's be honest about finances. You probably won't match your corporate salary immediately — maybe never. But consider:
- Lower stress means fewer health costs
- More time means less spending on convenience (takeout, services, etc.)
- Purpose means less retail therapy
- Many instructors build private client bases that become quite lucrative
The question isn't "will I make the same money?" It's "what is my wellbeing worth?"
Taking the First Step
You don't have to decide today. But you can explore.
Here's what I'd suggest:
- Take some Pilates classes — If you haven't already, experience what you'd be teaching
- Talk to instructors — Ask about their journey, especially those who changed careers
- Attend an information session — Learn about the certification process with no commitment
- Imagine your life in one year — Same desk, or something new?
The Next Cohort Starts March 2026
PT 7 Academy's Reformer Instructor Course begins in March 2026. It's weekend-only, small groups (4-8 people), taught by globally certified instructors with 15+ years of experience.
If you're curious, reach out. No pressure, no sales pitch — just an honest conversation about whether this path might be right for you.
Because five years from now, you'll be somewhere. The question is: will it be the same corner office, or somewhere that makes you come alive?
